Carolina Panthers promote Dan Morgan to General Manager

The Carolina Panthers announced Monday they’ve promoted Dan Morgan to President of football operations/general manager.

Morgan, 45, previously served as assistant general manager for the past three seasons. He now finds himself as the lead front office decision maker of a franchise which finished the 2023 season 2-15 and has a potential franchise quarterback set in place in Bryce Young.

“By putting Morgan in this position, it allows them to tap into his football background and capitalize on his relationships with players, coaches, and agents throughout the league, with the context of the toughness he brought to the game,” the Panthers said in a press release. “While his playing credentials are pristine, he’s also been a part of multiple successful scouting departments, beginning as an intern with the Seahawks in 2010 and moving up the ranks throughout their Super Bowl run and eventually becoming their director of pro personnel.

“He moved to Buffalo in 2018 as director of player personnel, giving him insight into multiple organizations that have built consistent winners.”

Morgan, a former NFL linebacker, spent the entirety of his seven-year career in Carolina, making 59 starts and earning a trip to the Pro Bowl in 2004. The Panthers selected Morgan in the first-round of the 2001 NFL Draft out of Miami, where he won the Chuck Bednarik Award in his senior season as the top defensive player the nation. Morgan recorded a game-record 25 tackles in Super Bowl XXXVIII.

Panthers looking for next head coach after promoting from within for general manager position

Panthers employees learned of Morgan’s promotion via a text message sent by team owner David Tepper, per Albert Breer of Monday Morning Quarterback.

“I am excited to let you know that Dan Morgan will serve as our President of Football Operations/General Manager,” Tepper wrote. “Dan has a thorough knowledge of our football personnel and a clear vision to take us where we all want to go. We know he will attack this opportunity with the same intensity he did as a Panthers player.”

Next up on the Panthers’ list of duties for the offseason is to hire a head coach. Carolina has interviewed 11 candidates thus far, including Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris and Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn among others.
